India’s inability or unwillingness to recognise Nepalese yearning for ‘strategic autonomy’ even among pro-India figures is undoubtedly an irritant. India cannot shirk its responsibilities to assist Nepal on the slow and difficult journey towards normalcy. A tech upgrade in India-Nepal relations is the need of the hour. The 2026 general election finally awarded Nepalis what they have long desired: a single-party majority government. Since 1990, Nepal has seen 35 governments, 15 of them after the abolition of the monarchy in 2008. The goal aims to transition Nepal from a low-income to a middle-income country.
