Benchmark indices opened lower Monday due to heightened Middle East tensions and crude oil price increases, raising inflation and import bill concerns for India. The Sensex dropped over 700 points, or nearly 1%, to an intraday low of 76,857, while the Nifty 50 shed more than 200 points, or nearly 1%, to an intraday low of 24,000. The mid and small-cap segments also declined. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices also dropped by Indian benchmark indices opened the week deep in the red on Monday as renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran unsettled global financial markets and sent crude oil prices sharply higher. The sell-off reflected growing investor concerns over the impact of rising energy costs and geopolitical uncertainty. While analysts expect near-term volatility to persist, they say domestic factors such as improving corporate earnings and sustained buying interest could continue to support Indian equities. The Nifty 50 was down 68.65 points or 0.28%to trade at 24,138.25, while the 30-stock index was trading 202.46 points or 0.26% lower at 77,366.93.
