A widespread outbreak of cyclosporiasis, caused by the microscopic parasite *Cyclospora cayetanensis*, is being investigated across the US, with cases reported in 34 states, including Michigan (over 2,600 cases) and West Virginia. Health officials are focusing investigations on contaminated fresh produce, particularly lettuce and salad greens, as potential sources of the foodborne illness, which causes explosive diarrhea. While no single source has been confirmed, investigators are tracing the supply chain. The parasite spreads through the fecal-oral route via contaminated food or water, and symptoms can last for weeks.
